SEC probes trading in Facebook, private firms

The SEC probe is at a preliminary stage and appears to be focusing partly on funds that have been set up to allow investors access to shares in private companies

The Securities and Exchange Commission is looking into the trading of shares in privately held companies that include Facebook and Twitter, according to people familiar with the matter.

Such trading has taken off on small, private exchanges in the past year, helping to boost the multi-billion-dollar valuations of the social-networking companies and other closely held concerns.
