SEC’s Gary Gensler warns lawmakers not to undermine wider markets with crypto rules

New legislation to regulate crypto markets could inadvertently undermine broader market regulations that already exist, Gensler told the WSJ CFO Network Summit

Securities and Exchange Commission chair Gary Gensler expressed concern 14 June that efforts in Congress to write legislation for the cryptocurrency industry could compromise regulations that govern the broader capital markets.

Asked about a bill introduced last week by senators Cynthia Lummis and Kirsten Gillibrand, Gensler initially demurred, saying he would prefer to discuss the proposed legislation with the senators. But he then suggested that legislative changes targeting cryptocurrencies could have implications for stock exchanges or mutual funds.
