A year ago I forecast that the future of the EU could be transformed by a series of elections in 2017. I was right. For all the wrong reasons.

Having failed to foresee that Theresa May would hold a snap election, and still less that she would almost lose it, it is tempting to predict the UK will have another unscheduled election in 2018. Such a poll could certainly transform the future of the UK, if not the EU, as there would be a good chance it would result in a hard-left government headed by Jeremy Corbyn. Yet it seems much more likely that May will struggle on, grinding through the thankless task of negotiating the UK’s future relationship with the EU.
