SocGen analyst advises bet against Morgan Stanley

French bank credit analyst advised clients to buy a five-year credit default swap on Morgan Stanley before today's first quarter earnings announcement – a bet that would prove to be profitable if the US bank underperforms

Morgan Stanley is set to report its first quarter results later today, but analysts have been bearish on its prospects – with one credit analyst even suggesting that that investors place bets against the US bank.

John Guarnera, an analyst at French bank Societe Generale, last week recommended to clients that they should buy five-year credit default swaps on Morgan Stanley before its first quarter earnings announcement, a bet that would prove to be profitable if it underperforms.
