Shell Transport and Trading has topped an index that rates companies and industries on their environmental management and performance.

The Business in the Environment's (BiE) fifth Corporate Environmental Engagement index surveyed 184 companies, including 78 from the FTSE 100 and 152 from the FTSE 350. The sample featured both companies which manage pension funds and fund management firms, and will be of particular interest to managers of socially responsible funds.
