A central bank digital currency could co-exist and complement existing payment options, and not replace the euro, European Union Commissioner Mairead McGuinness said.

In a 10 October address at this year’s Sibos conference in Amsterdam, McGuinness said the development of a digital euro would involve cooperation with the private sector.
