Size matters for private equity

Mega funds are no longer a US preserve but are a focus in Europe

In the public debt and equity markets, this year the focus on deals has been size - big debt issues, bumper loans, huge IPOs and mega mergers. The private equity market is following this lead this year has witnessed the rise of the mega fund. More funds have reportedly been raised than the whole of last year - more than $35bn.

Moreover, these funds are not just limited to the US, which is more accustomed to its domestic private equity firms raising large amounts of funds. In Europe, an astonishing $25bn (&#836429bn) of investment funds has been raised so far this year, compared with $27bn last year, according to figures from JP Morgan.
