UBS Warburg has been hired by Jefferson Smurfit, the Irish-American paper and packaging company, to advise it on an approach from an unknown third party.

The news of the potential deal, expected to be worth as much as €1.1bn ($1bn), sent other bankers working in the sector rushing to contact their clients as analysts predicted a wave of consolidation in the sector.
