Sports Direct escapes defeat on chairman vote

Independent shareholders in troubled retailer Sports Direct have narrowly given their backing to embattled chairman Keith Hellawell, who had said he would stand down if he failed to win the vote.

Sports Direct has been at the centre of a corporate-governance battle for much of the past year, with shareholders including Fidelity, Hermes, Legal & General and Royal London publicly opposing Hellawell's re-election.
