Stanley Fischer, Groundbreaking Economist and Fed Vice Chair, Dies at 81

He helped shape a generation of central bankers and economic policymakers

Stanley Fischer, one of the most influential economists of recent decades, has died. He was 81.

Fischer served as vice chairman of the Federal Reserve from 2014 to 2017. He left his biggest mark in prior decades, as professor of economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, second in command at the International Monetary Fund and governor of the Bank of Israel, which confirmed his death.
