Stephen Roach, the influential former chief economist and long time bull on the Chinese growth story, is retiring from Morgan Stanley after joining the bank in 1982.

James Gorman, chief executive of Morgan Stanley, said in a memo yesterday that Roach has decided to retire from the firm to focus on academia.
