Still not the best places to work

Investment banks were conspicuous by their absence from the Financial Times' top-100 workplaces in Europe this year, yielding to companies such as the wonderfully named engineering services firm from Luxembourg, Goblet Lavandier & Ass, and PR firm Fishburn Hedges, whose famed playroom has finally got the recognition it deserves.

Despite the horrendous job cuts and widespread malaise across the industry, one investment bank did make it into the top 50 workplaces in the UK, however – Morgan Stanley. In fact, according to the figures in the survey, the bank's staff has escaped the purges almost entirely. The bank claims to have 4,685 employees in the UK, down on last year's 4,688. If only three of the bank's staff were moved on in 2002, compared to the hundreds that competitors made redundant, then little wonder its workforce is so happy to be in the office. We need convincing…
