The majority of active equity fund managers undershot their benchmarks in 2018, marking another dire year for stock-pickers and underlining the rise of index funds, according to analysis from Standard & Poor’s.

S&P Dow Jones Indices, the index division of the ratings agency, studies the performance of over 2,000 active equity funds every six months, comparing their performance to its indices.
