Straumur reassures on UK brokers amid foreign sale plans

Prime Minister rushes through emergency bill to hand regulator greater power

Icelandic investment bank Straumur Monday sounded a note of reassurance to Teather & Greenwood and Bridgewell Securities, two UK brokers it bought from a rival last week, despite an agreement struck between the main Icelandic banks and their government to sell foreign assets to shore up capital and liquidity positions.

The government also acted quickly Monday night to give itself intervention capabilities to assist troubled banks.
