Summer 2012: Dire warnings of war, unrest and market crashes

Summer is traditionally a time to go on holiday and for business to be quiet. But this year there are several burgeoning crises that could send the global economy into free fall

This is usually the time of year when fund managers should be packing their beach towels, but instead they are finding the holiday season interrupted by dire warnings of another dramatic collapse in stock markets.

CheckRisk, a risk consultancy which predicted last summer's market chaos, warned this month that its econometric models indicated there was a real risk that stock markets could fall as much as 15% this year.
