Talks end between UniCredit and Italian government over sale of Banca Monte dei Paschi

President Draghi needs to reprivatise the bank by April under an agreement struck with European authorities

Months-long talks between the Italian government and bank UniCredit over the sale of nationalised lender Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena have ended, UniCredit and the government said on 24 October.

The collapse of the negotiations is a blow to the government headed by former European Central Bank President Mario Draghi, which needs to reprivatise the bank by April under an agreement struck with European authorities when Rome rescued the Tuscan bank in 2017.
