Tougher tax penalties on the way

Comment: The UK government is set to tighten the screws on tax avoidance. But will it kill the goose laying golden eggs?

The UK government is facing the difficult task of boosting a nervous economy, without ostracising wealthy individuals and wealth creators by imposing potentially counterproductive tax avoidance penalties.

Last week, the deputy prime minister, Nick Clegg, suggested that the 2012 Budget will contain new tax rules to tackle avoidance. Such a move threatens to undo much of the Coalition's good work in incentivising the tax system.
