Banks are miles behind tech firms in securing intellectual property rights in fintech — but one US bank is considerably ahead of its rivals

US technology giants IBM, Google and Microsoft hold 10 times more fintech patents than the world’s 15 largest banks put together, according to a new report that lays bare the extent of tech firms’ control over the intellectual future of finance.

And while Bank of America leads the field among the banks, according to the report, French lender BNP Paribas holds just one fintech patent to its name — in stark contrast to IBM’s 23,864.
