John Thain, chief executive of NYSE Euronext, the transatlantic exchange, and former president and chief operating officer of Goldman Sachs, has become the first outsider to be appointed chairman and chief executive of Merrill Lynch.

Merrill Lynch said in a statement that Thain's appointment is effective from the beginning of next month.
