In the end, Lloyd Blankfein was undone by the same business that had propelled him to the very top of Wall Street: trading.

Goldman Sachs’ outgoing chief executive built his career around trading in fixed income, currency, and commodities, known as FICC. As the bank’s leader, he staked Goldman’s future on it, even as rivals exited or scaled back the same line of business after the financial crisis.
