It's not often some of the biggest names in Hollywood discuss collateralised debt obligations, credit-default swaps and mortgage-backed securities on screen.

Trying to cram derivatives into a movie is a big ask. But director Adam McKay gives it a try with The Big Short, freely adapted from the book by Michael Lewis about the financial crisis and the hedge funds that made billions by shorting exotic financial instruments.
