It is time to stop venerating workaholic bosses

With evidence piling up that excessively long hours are bad for your health, we need to stop treating it like a badge of honour

It is time to stop venerating workaholic bosses

Investment banking boss Andrea Orcel’s views on working hours in a recent interview had me rolling my eyes. He said: “Life is about choices, some people will give it 15 hours a day, and some people will give it eight or nine hours a day. But I don’t think you can have people giving it three hours, not in this industry.”

While I agree that you cannot and should not get away with working three hours a day in the City, what annoys me is the suggestion that working 15 hours a day is a good “choice” and something we should aspire to.
