The Fintech Files: Fund managers’ appetite for fintech on the wane

Welcome to The Fintech Files, your weekly roundup from FN's fintech correspondent Yolanda Bobeldijk, keeping you up-to-date with the latest developments in financial tech and innovation.

Asset managers fail to see fintech benefits
Did you think innovation was THE word on everybody’s lips? Well, it isn't among asset managers, according to research by consultancy Alpha FMC. The study, exclusively seen by my colleague David Ricketts, found that almost 70% of fund managers surveyed have not invested in fintech platforms — and have no plans to do so. Blockchain appetite is also at rock bottom they found, with just 8% of firms working on distributed ledger technology projects. Why? Many asset managers are reluctant due to the risk and upfront cost of investing in startup companies and/or proprietary software, Alpha FMC said. Also, with so many fintechs, many fund managers have no idea which they should speak to, it said.
