Investment bankers are a self-confident and hypercritical bunch. In private, they rarely have good word to say about their bosses.

So, much of the tone of the anonymous memo attacking the leadership of HSBC’s global banking and markets business is not entirely shocking. In City bars you could hear similar sentiments expressed about many other firms.
