l Let's hope that clients of Ed Kaufman, a telecoms banker at Schroder Salomon Smith Barney, already knew of his planned departure from the bank, and were not in the London headquarters on Tuesday afternoon. Banks tend to keep very quiet when staff members leave – and often they are thrust out the door on the day they quit. But when Kaufman departed for pastures greener last week, colleagues thought they would send him off with a rather large leaving card. All very normal, you may say. However, it was a little indiscreet for one employee to deposit a package containing the card on the main reception desk, stage whispering to the receptionist: "It's Ed Kaufman's leaving card." Oops, the secret's out.
