Billing himself as the "Cyrano de Bergerac" of the business world, Steve Morris, a director at consultancy Burton Morris, is relaunching his self-help book, Great Business Letters in a Week, now in its third edition. Morris is on a mission to reform the language of business, particularly in banking and financial services, where he says he has advised thousands on their writing style, including a number of chief executives. "The language of banking used to be very stuffy and pompous – rather like Captain Mainwaring in Dad's Army. Now it's just very, very bland – like one of those smiley faces – and no one really believes that either," he says. "People are just afraid to write with flair and let their personalities shine through." Then again, considering the personalities of many investment bankers, perhaps that's just as well.
