Andersen's number-crunching problems in auditing Enron's accounts for the past few years and the accounting firm's skill at destroying sensitive documents has not yet led to an exodus of its auditing clients on this side of the Atlantic ocean. A straw poll by Financial News of 25 big Andersen audit clients to see if they had sacked or were considering sacking Andersen as their auditor drew a no comment - or no response at all - from virtually everyone. Except one. Colin Skellett, the chairman of Wessex Water, dictated a terse statement: 'We regularly review our auditors and our audit committee will be reviewing them in future. We will be considering them on their merit.' He then declined to take any more questions. Just one thing though. Wessex Water is owned by, er, Enron, which has already sacked Andersen as its auditor.
