Three options for Brussels as Theresa May’s Brexit deal crumbles

The EU’s main reaction to Tuesday's vote will once again be to wait for the UK to make up its mind

The rejection of UK Prime Minister Theresa May's Brexit withdrawal agreement by the House of Commons will hardly register as a shock in the offices of Europe’s chief negotiator Michel Barnier in Brussels . The uncertainty has been hanging over the talks for more than two years and the EU’s main reaction will once again be to wait for the UK to make up its mind.

One possibility would be for May to revoke the UK’s notification of Article 50, thus ending the Brexit saga — at least from Brussels’ viewpoint — at the price of a major domestic uproar. That, however, is unlikely. Instead, Brussels will face one of three possible outcomes:
