It is always dangerous to write off Martin Gilbert. In his long career, the asset management veteran has hit some fearsome rocks that would have sunk lesser men. Yet still he sails on.

It was recently reported that he was about to step down from the board of Standard Life Aberdeen, more than 35 years after he founded Aberdeen Asset Management. But the company issued a swift denial.
