Trade finance units hunt terrorists and crime gangs

The units are under closer scrutiny as they are enlisted to fight money laundering

Banks’ trade finance units are being drafted into the battles against terrorism, money laundering, and sanctions busting. The data collected as banks finance trade flows across the world is seen as a treasure trove of information to help combat these illicit flows.

André Casterman, global head corporate and supply chain markets at Swift, which provides secure financial messaging, says this is one reason regulators are taking "a firmer grip" on anti-money laundering compliance.
