After a high-profile glitch dogged Facebook’s debut on Nasdaq last year, the US exchange will have been hoping that its technical gremlins were firmly in the past.

But an outage of over three hours on the exchange yesterday afternoon halted trading in all securities - preventing investors from buying or selling into some of the US' most famous tech companies.
