J Sainsbury has appointed UBS and Morgan Stanley — the banks that once helped the UK retailer fend off private equity ownership — to advise on a landmark merger with rival Asda.

Sainsbury's said on Monday that it had agreed terms on a deal that values Walmart-owned Asda at around £7.3bn. The tie-up will create a retail giant with combined revenues of £51bn.
