UBS this morning emerged as sole financial adviser to Spanish utility Gas Natural, which has made a €22.7bn ($28bn) unsolicited cash and shares offer for Endesa, a local rival which is twice its size.

Goldman Sachs advised Gas Natural on its two previous largest takeover attempts, both aborted hostile offers for Iberdrola, a Spanish electricity company. Goldman Sachs declined to comment.
