UBS CEO Ermotti says European banks must merge to compete

Ermotti joins a chorus of senior executives who believe the region's banks need scale to compete with US rivals

Sergio Ermotti, the chief executive of UBS, has said European investment banks should be allowed to merge to match the success of Wall Street.

In a call with journalists accompanying UBS’s 2019 full-year results, the head of the Swiss bank said Europe had “become totally obsessed with too big to fail” in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis — preventing the creation of national champions to compete with Wall Street.
