UK bank shielded by French shorting law

UK bank HSBC remains protected by restrictions on short selling thanks to its listing in Paris, after France extended its veto on increasing short positions in large financial firms.

HSBC and transatlantic exchange NYSE Euronext, which both have listings in Paris, join 13 other financial firms that enjoy protection from short sellers via the French ban, which restricts increasing short positions anywhere in the world, according to Ian Rogers, senior associate in charge of the French asset management practice at lawyers Simmons & Simmons.
