European financial firms will get automatic temporary permission to operate in the UK, as part of the government's efforts to avoid a cliff-edge Brexit.

The move, announced by the Treasury today, would enable UK regulators to better cope with an expected deluge of firms seeking authorisation to do business in the country ahead of its 2019 exit from the EU. It will also help keep European firms operating in the UK.
