The UK Patent Office has enjoyed its most successful year with big increases in applications for patents, up 6% to over 30,000, and trademarks, up 11% to more than 84,000.

Most patents were granted in the telecoms sector with 865 patents, followed by machine elements with 633, civil engineering with 462 and electric circuitry with 429.
