Rising equity markets triggered a welcome improvement in the funding position of UK pension schemes last month, according to the Pension Protection Fund, the state-sponsored lifeboat organisation.

The aggregate deficit of the 6,300 schemes in its so-called PPF 7800 index fell to £115.7 billion in July, against a deficit of £134.3 billion at the start of the month and £292.6 billion a year ago.
