The UK's accounting regulator is preparing for a possible investigation into the work KPMG carried out for construction firm Carillion prior to it going into liquidation and potentially causing thousands of job losses across the country.

The Financial Reporting Council today said it had been monitoring the situation in consultation with other regulators and that it has "powers to investigate the circumstances relating to the audit of Carillion as well as the action of the relevant accounting professionals".
