Landmark rules that called for shareholders to beef up their oversight of companies are set to be toughened up after a government review threatened to scrap them last year.

The Financial Reporting Council, the City regulator that oversees corporate governance as well as the audit profession, launched a review of its stewardship code on January 30. The code was established in the wake of the financial crisis to improve shareholder engagement with UK companies.
