Underfunded pensions 'will take years to recover'

Deficits in occupational pension funds will take "at least five years" to plug, according to pension consultants Watson Wyatt. Despite the recent recovery in share prices, fund will need significant injections of cash.

A market rebound has closed the average deficit by an estimated 6%, but global pension funds are still only 80% funded. Watson Wyatt says funds lost 40% of their value between 1999 and 2002.
