UniCredit has named a new head of strategy at a crucial time for the Italian lender, as it embarks on a plan to clean-up its balance sheet and rebuild its capital position.

In a statement today the Italian bank said Andrea Maffezzoni had been appointed as head of strategy and M&A, reporting to group chief executive Jean Pierre Mustier.
