US accounting system encourages failure, SEC says

Chairman Harvey Pitt calls for new watchdog

Harvey Pitt, chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, was scathing in his assessment of the US accounting system as he demanded that an independent watchdog monitor accounting firms.

Calling for an end to self-regulation in the accounting industry, Pitt said: 'We cannot afford an accounting system like the present one that facilitates failure rather than success. We have had far too many financial and accounting failures.'
