Banks in London are on a hiring spree for support staff as they try to build on recent strong investment banking performances, undeterred by fears of a subsequent downturn in business.

Wall Street heavyweights Lehman Brothers, Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan are seeking operations or middle-office staff. Bankers say others, including UBS, are also trying to boost their teams.
