US equity trading volumes head for five-year low

Exchanges’ third quarter earnings reports are likely to be impacted by low equity trading volumes

US equity trading volumes this month are set to be their lowest since before the financial crisis, indicating bad news for exchanges’ third quarter earnings reports.

Richard Repetto, an analyst at boutique Sandler O'Neill + Partners, said in a report yesterday that so far this month US equity trading volumes are an average of 5.7 billion shares per day, the lowest monthly average since September 2007.
