US exchanges wrangle over electronic issues

The debate rages as to whether online exchanges offer a level playing field

Concerns about the future and direction of securities trading in the US mirror those of Europe. But the US, as usual, adds certain twists.

For one thing, it supports multiple exchanges, and while European institutions agonise over cross-border issues, the problems in America are internal - and regulated by only one agency, the US Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC).
