US insurers plan hedge fund expansion

Consultancy Patpatia & Associates finds 17% of US insurers are planning their first investments in the sector

Rising numbers of US insurance firms are turning to hedge funds in search of returns they cannot find elsewhere, according to research from Patpatia & Associates.

The San Francisco-based financial services management consultancy, which specialises in insurance firms, canvassed 47 US insurers, including almost half of those in the country with more than $25 billion under management.
