Before Paul Weiss Rifkind Wharton & Garrison kicked off an aggressive expansion in the City two years ago, the London office of the US law firm was seen as a satellite office for New York.

The US powerhouse had maintained a small team of City lawyers for decades. This was a common tactic, with many of its large rivals staying small and nimble in the UK and rarely tapping rivals for top talent.
