US regulators near settlement with Wall Street firms

Speculation mounted on Thursday night that US regulators are on the verge of announcing a settlement with Wall Street banks over conflicts of interest.

The two sides could be ready to unveil an agreement on the future of equity research as well as fines the 12 banks are to pay as soon as Friday, sources close to the talks said.
