US regulators to float mandatory emissions disclosure in climate push

Proposal would require public companies to provide estimates of direct and indirect greenhouse-gas emissions

US regulators are set to propose stringent requirements for publicly traded companies to report information on greenhouse-gas emissions and risks related to climate change, in one of the Biden administration’s most significant environmental actions to date.

The Securities and Exchange Commission will begin considering the proposed rules in a meeting at 11 am ET 21 March. If a majority of the agency’s four commissioners — three Democrats and one Republican — votes in favour, it will open the proposal to public comment for at least two months before working to finalise a rule.
